The honeymoon trends you'll want to get on board with

You've got your entire wedding planned out, but how's your honeymoon shaping up?
Perhaps you've already got a rough idea, or maybe you've been too busy organising bomboniere tags and blush bridesmaids' dresses to even think about where to go. Just like weddings, there are honeymoon trends too. New must-visit hotspots burst onto the 'moon scene and alternative styles of honeymooning are always popping up. So what do the most recent trends have in store for loved-up couples? Hint: jaw-dropping destinations, gourmet getaways and action-packed spots for adrenalin-seekers. For your daily dose of travel inspo, we've rounded up 10 of our favourite trends but be warned, you might just want to do all of them...

The dream destination

Mexico, Bali and Fiji are perennially popular honeymoon classics, but there are some up-and-coming hotspots that should be on your radar. The Caribbean's hottest getaway is Cuba, with the US recently relaxing restrictions on its citizens visiting this magical island. Lovers of retro style, salsa, sultry shores and racy rum should hightail it straight to the capital, Havana. In Asia, Sri Lanka's boutique hotel scene is burgeoning, with a winning combo of palm-fringed beaches, temples and tasty food. Adventurous types can discover Myanmar (Burma), with Vietnam and Cambodia also promising South-East Asian allure.

Thinking of a European 'moon? Greece's affordable islands beckon, including blue-and-white beauties Mykonos and Santorini. Mix up a traditional European honeymoon itinerary by jetting to Portuguese capital Lisbon or Budapest in Hungary. For island chilling, try Malta or Menorca, a calmer Spanish alternative to Ibiza. For natural highs, Oman's Alila Jabal Akhdar offers mountain-peak perfection, or canoodle while watching Iceland's Northern Lights at the super sleek 101 Hotel in Reykjavik.

The foodiemoon

Yep, this is a thing *throws up hands in excitement*. If the way to your or your partner's heart is through the stomach, why not theme your honeymoon around food? Gourmet escapes are on the up, egged on by our obsession with all things edible. Destinations that serve up romance with mouthwatering eats include Asian go-tos Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia (Penang's Georgetown is a must). Taiwan is a dream for desserts, while Hong Kong offers fine dining and street-food snacks. In Europe, think Italy for carbs and cocktails, Croatia for seafood and salads, and France for frites and fromage. Don't write off the UK: celeb chef-packed London is a serious gastronomic getaway. Ask your hotel to cue up some cooking classes, cocktail-making sessions or local food market tours. Packing tip: leave your belts at home.

The staycation

Put your passport down because a local getaway can trump schlepping overseas on a long-haul flight. Devotees of design, art and food should make for stylish new hotspot The Old Clare Hotel in Sydney's hip 'hood Chippendale. Set in an old heritage-listed pub and brewery, its 62 rooms are coolly contemporary, revealing traces of their history contrasted with slinky showers, freestanding baths and bespoke comforts. Unwind in the rooftop lap pool or funky bar, before feasting in three top chef-toting restaurants; mod-Oz Automata, neo-Nordic Silvereye and casual Kensington St Social. A poolside bar and spa are coming soon. The hotel is a skip from White Rabbit Gallery for contempo-Chinese art, niche shops on Kensington Street and new al fresco Asian hawker centre Spice Alley in the Central Park complex.

Over on the west coast, Perth has just welcomed the elegant 48-room COMO The Treasury. Housed in 140-year-old state buildings, the hotel's gorgeous boudoirs are joined by the indulgent COMO Shambhala Urban Escape spa, a 20-metre indoor pool and an exciting new precinct of wining, dining and hand-picked local stores. It also makes a chic stopover before picking up Air Mauritius flights to the Indian Ocean.

For glam surfside Sydney stays, QT Bondi is perched on the site of the old Swiss Grand Resort & Spa, right across from the beach. If you want to get out of the city, head to Bannisters by the Sea at Mollymook on the NSW South Coast, where Collette Dinnigan has refurbished two Penthouse Suites (Rick Stein's restaurant is another draw). Flash new 35-room sister escape Bannisters Pavilion recently opened nearby. In Canberra, Hotel Hotel offers cutting-edge Australian design, food, drink and guest bikes.

The Airbnb

Up your honeymoon game by getting away to some of the world's most unique homes. Airbnb delivers spectacularly stylish stays around the globe, many of them in sought-after neighbours where hotels can be hard to come by. You can book a whole apartment, house or beach pad in 190-plus countries. The reviews from past travellers guarantee your stay is up to scratch. Even celeb digs are up for grabs, such as fashion designer Collette Dinnigan's country home in Milton on NSW's South Coast, which sleeps eight, or stylist Sibella Court's ultra-cool Paddington terrace, which sleeps three. One Fine Stay also has a stellar line-up of properties in London, Paris, New York and LA, with expect local support for 'homemade hospitality'.

If you're a believer in 'the more, the merrier', book a big multi-room abode and roll your destination wedding into your honeymoon, inviting your posse along for the ride. How does a French château for 12 sound? Or a six-bedroom oceanfront villa in Bali? An eight-bed villa in Tuscany? Or a summer house for 16 on Greece's Antiparos Island? The only hard part will be deciding where to go... oh, and how many pics to post to your Instagram feed.

The safari

It's time to go wild. Imagine spotting hundreds of kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos and wombats at sunset, before returning to your romantic Federation-style suite for a soak in your private dipping pool, followed by a glass of Mudgee red. At Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley you can team a destination honeymoon with a stylish safari just three hours' drive from Sydney. As well as guided 4WD and night safaris, you can mountain-bike or horse-ride around this 7,000-acre nature reserve, backdropped by epic escarpments. Smart locally-sourced food and wine, a soothing spa and lounger-lined outdoor pool keep the good times coming. For another luxe Australian wilderness honeymoon option, check out glamping getaway Paperbark Camp in Jervis Bay on the NSW South Coast.

Overseas, go wild at minimal-yet-cosy Fogo Island Inn near Newfoundland in Canada, where iceberg-dotted horizons provide a cliché-free honeymoon setting. The Treehotel in Swedish Lapland offers canopy-top cabins shaped like a UFO, bird's nest and mirror cube, while new Brit country club Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire lets you live out your English countryside fantasies with horseriding, boating, tennis, cycling and even an ice rink in winter.

The mini and multimoon

After time off for organising and throwing a wedding - or even your hen's weekend - you may find you've emptied your holiday allowance (and your bank account). The solution? The minimoon. A shorter break after your nuptials will help you recover in style, especially if you aim for a domestic or short-haul sojourn. Busy couples are also ditching a single honeymoon for a multimoon; taking one quickie straight away, either together or with family and friends, then cueing up another exotic, longer trip down the track once they've topped up their annual leave and finances.

The fitspo getaway

Fitness honeymoons have hit their stride. With fitspo role models and #cleaneating ruling social media, couples that train together can keep their six-packs in shape after their big day. If beach lounging or spa slacking isn't your speed, consider an active honeymoon based around trekking, cycling or kayaking. For luxurious Tasmanian group getaways, try the super-scenic Bay of Fires Lodge Walk or Cradle Mountain Huts Overland Track, which combine glamping, great guides and gourmet highs. You can also opt for the newer Wineglass Bay Sail Walk with its snazzy yacht. To get really hardcore, curated Ninja Camps in Bali, Guatemala and New Zealand sport CrossFit,  swimming, yoga, surfing and canyoning, with future camps planned in Iceland, Japan and the Philippines.

The 'moon for your Instagram feed

Just as planning a wedding is becoming a Pinterest pastime, honeymoon destinations are being rated for their social media-friendliness. We don't just want locations to be good, we want them to look good - on Facebook and Instagram, that is, preferably with #nofilter. If your Insta gallery is your top priority, then be sure to pick a honeymoon hotel with a killer bar, a bar with a view, a stellar chef and boudoirs with balconies. You can't go wrong with the vertiginous glamour of Italy's Amalfi Coast and pastel-pretty Cinque Terre, or chic-to-the-max Capri (#negroni #campari #aperolspritz). Prefer to stay on the other side of the camera (or phone)? Instagram is a bonafide hotbed of travel inspo, so get scrolling to find your next destination.

The hotel hop

Can't decide on a destination, but know which hotel brand you like? Then string together several stays from your favourite accommodation group to make up an unforgettable moon (the travel equivalent of dressing in top-to-toe Balenciaga or Céline). Your loyalty may even be rewarded with combination packages or special benefits. Ravishing resorts include Bali's three Alila Hotels and Resorts - team the beachy keen new Alila Seminyak with clifftop design-den Alila Villas Uluwatu and the chilled shoreside Alila Villas Soori, a skip from Tanah Lot Temple. Aman addicts can Euro-hop from Aman Venice on the Grand Canal to Aman Sveti Stefan in coastal Montenegro, Amanzoe in Greece's Peloponnese or Amanruya on Turkey's Bodrum Peninsula. For funky US road trips, Ace Hotel has Portland, Palm Springs, Los Angeles and New York covered, plus Pittsburgh and New Orleans digs have recently opened too. This boutique hotel brand is known for its quirky rooms set in unique historic buildings.
